7:30 Materials Engineering Projects of the Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University

Founded in 2008 with nearly $6 million of seed funding, the Great Lakes Energy Institute (GLEI) at Case Western Reserve University supports faculty by linking energy research to industry needs and economic development initiatives. In October 2009, Case Western Reserve University and its GLEI were designated as one of Ohio's Centers of Excellence in Advanced Energy.

Three GLEI projects that originate in the Department of Material Science and Engineering will be highlighted in this program addressing solar and wind energy production as well as energy storage in advanced capacitors. Prof. Roger French will provide an overview of two Ohio Third Frontier Projects: The Solar Durability and Lifetime Extension (Sun-DLE) Center and the Mirror Augmented Photovoltaic (MAPV) Project. Prof. David Matthiesen will describe a Third Frontier Program: Wind Energy Research and Commercialization Center (WERC) as well as an ARPA-E Project: Transformation-Enabled Magnets Absent Rare Earths (focused on Fe16N2 as a permanent magnet). Finally, Prof. Gerhard Welsch will review his ARPA-E Project: High-Power Titanate Capacitor for Power Electronics.
