Speakers Title:

The Future of Materials Technology: Design, Failure Analysis and Societal Impact

Presentation Abstract:

Dr. Schmidt has practiced Life Cycle Design Engineering (LCDE) since his early experience with DuPont 1972.  He was mentored by several industrial revolutionary icons in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), to concurrently identify visionary solutions to engineering challenges along with incremental design improvements.  The design cycle begins with materials selection where today, the requirements to consider ultimate disposal/recycling, are as important as functional performance and economic viability.  The future of materials technology is therefore linked to our global society in creating medical, consumer, industrial, and intellectual property products that will serve and meet new energy and ecological criteria.  Examples will be presented that illustrate how design improvements are dependent on LCDE concepts starting with product and process design, including efficient in-line quality control, and feedback using failure analysis to anticipate and prevent adverse performance in the field.  Modern analytical tools utilized by forensic professional engineers are equally useful in implementing changes with the goal of continuous improvement.
